  1. I found the essay "Nature" more compelling than "Self Reliance." I found Nature compelling because it made a good point of how we would actually care about looking at the stars if you could only see one every thousand years. I never thought about stars like that before. "Self Reliance" was more about being independent and didn't make me think about the world differently like "Nature" did.

  2. Emerson’s pieces Self Reliance and Nature have much in common but many difference’s as well. Personally, I found Self Reliance to be much more compelling than the other work of writing. Self Reliance is all about how you should be one with yourself, speak your mind and not be afraid to stand out. IN the society that we live in that is very easy to connect to, unlike in Nature. This piece is all about how we should be one with nature and have a child’s perspective of nature. That is much harder for me to relate to because I love the earth, but not in that way. Compelling to me means convincing, forceful and grabs your full attention.

  3. I consider "Self Reliance" much more compelling than the second essay, "Nature." "Nature" is a thorough insight to how people perceive nature, while "Self Reliance" is more relatable because it explains how people perceive themselves. It speaks about how we find our purpose, how we choose to live our lives, how everyone has the potential to be great something, and how to achieve independence. All of these can directly impact how a person lives, making it easier to connect to on a personal level, which in turn makes the reader more open to the beliefs being spread. I define compelling as how well something can capture the attention of someone and how it affects them, and "Self Reliance" does both of those very well.

  4. Both of Emerson's pieces revealed a part of his genius that is not seen often at all without digging into the depths of philosophy and literature. Emerson does what he can to articulate his feelings and passions that others find ridiculous or unworthy of a second thought. Many will fail to understand why such a fluid passion pours out of his words when he speaks of the natural world or what Emerson means when he says, "I become a transparent eyeball". I am one of these people, but despite this I feel compelled to choose "Nature" over, "Self-reliance". It is simply a peculiar passage, representing an intimidating window into Emerson's mind, but is extremely intriguing and mysterious nonetheless.

  5. The second essay, "Nature," was more compelling than the first, "Self-Reliance." Of course both showed insight to the perpetuous ideas that flowed through Emerson's mind. Both sharing the thoughts that he had about the people and the miraculous world around. Emerson shared thoughts and ideas that I for one had never thought of. "Nature" showed perfect insights into Emerson's mind. For instance, the idea of the stars revealing themselves to the world only every thousand years. It was thoughts such as this one that Emerson such a riveting writer and has people still reading his work today.

These pieces of writing were very well written however, I found "Self Reliance" to be more compelling opposed to "Nature". In this piece of writing, Emerson discusses how we should voice our own opinion and stand up for what we believe in. He wrote about being self dependent and not following the crowd. Also, everyone can connect to " Self Reliance" more than they could "Nature". "Nature" is written about the view humans have of nature and our earth while "Self Reliance" is written about how people view themselves. I believe compelling means to be evoked and to be captivated.

  7. I found "Self Reliance" to be more compelling than "Nature" because I feel that I can better connect to "Self Reliance". "Nature" is about how humans view nature and how only few people can understand the true beauty of nature. "Self Reliance", however, is about how people view themselves and how they should not be afraid to voice their opinions. I found "Self Reliance" more compelling because I was more interested to read about humans perception of themselves rather than their perception of nature. I would define compelling as capturing someones interest, and "Self Reliance" captured my own interest over "Nature".

  8. Emerson had insight into the world that no one else really saw. He has shown this through both of his works, "Nature" and "Self-Reliance". Although both may really speak to some people, for me "Self-Reliance" is more compelling. "Nature" talks more about how man can connect with nature, and how they can learn to see and appreciate what others cannot; while "Self-Reliance" is about how man perceives himself, and the fact that they do not trust in their ideas and themselves in general. As I am not one with nature, "Self-Reliance" relates to me better. Others may also relate to his writing due to his messages about trusting our own ideas, that everyone has greatness in them and that we should overcome situations our own way. To me, compelling is something that I can relate to, something that grabs my attention and captivates me.

  9. I believe that "Nature" is more compelling t read than "Self Reliance" is. I would define compelling as something that captivates someone's attention and draws them closer to something. I believe that Nature was more compelling because it talks more about human perspective of nature and how even a child's perspective can be greater than an adult's. Not only this part, but I found the content of Nature to be very interesting. Not only that, but the imagery used in it I amazing and I almost felt as if I was thrust into the heart of the essay. Overall<believe that "Nature" was a great essay and I would recommend it to people.

  10. Emerson wrote two very powerful essays entitled "Nature," and "Self Reliance." Personally, I think that "Nature" is more compelling to me personally as a reader. Compelling, which is something that evokes interest, attention or admiration to a certain point is definitely displayed in "Nature." It brings forth real world examples and things that we see in our every day life, just to grab the attention of the reader, and really speak to their hearts. Although as I grew up, I learned a lot about self independence and providing for yourself, I feel as if the essay, "Self Reliance" does not speak to my heart. I already know the majority of the things that Emerson is talking about in that work. The imagery used in "Nature" makes it easier for me to visualize, and I would definitely recommend it.

  11. I find that Emerson's "Self Reliance" was more compelling to me rather than "Nature". Compelling can be defined as something that draws interest towards itself for admirable traits. "Self Reliance" teaches us to become independent and trust in our own ideas, rather than conform to the rest of society's ways. That message is an important lesson in life, while "Nature" simply describes the comfort of the outdoors and to enjoy solitude. There is nothing wrong with "Nature" but it does not seem as meaningful as "Self Reliance". In "Self Reliance" Emerson teaches you to speak up and not be afraid of alienation because of your thoughts, and that is why "Self Reliance" has such a strong message.

  12. I define compelling as sparking one's attention and drawing them closer to a certain object. And to me, "Self Reliance" was more compelling than "Nature". The reasoning be that I could connect more to "Self Reliance" because I am not a nature person so finding the importance of nature does not really spark my interest. I felt like the message behind "Self Reliance" of being independent and listening to yourself is more influential on me therefore it was more compelling.

  13. In my mind, Ralph Waldo Emerson is one of the greatest thinkers still widely renowned today and a true genius. As shown in both of his works, "Nature" and "Self Reliance", he was a man that really knew how he felt about certain topics and was not at all afraid to voice his opinions. Within the essay "Nature", Emerson discusses how he feels that people should perceive the natural world, whereas in "Self Reliance" he writes about how he believes people should perceive and treat their own ideas and thoughts. This shows that he was not only thoughtful about some things, but rather a plethora of areas. Though both essays were very well written, I personally find "Self Reliance" to be more compelling. By my own definition, compelling means to capture interest by way of evoking thoughts or feelings and the piece truly did that for me. The reason that I feel this way is because the essay is about truly learning to treasure one's thoughts and feelings, and I believe that a person should learn to treasure him or herself before they move on to seeing the beauty in larger things such as nature.

  14. I would define compelling as captivating or extremely interesting. I believe that "Self Reliance" was more interesting to read. I felt like "Self Reliance" was a great essay to read because it explained why relying on yourself is important. As you get older you need to be responsible and being able to rely on yourself is a great thing. This was compelling because self reliance is real and you need to have it in order to be successful.

  15. I thought that "Nature" was a more compelling read than "Self Reliance" was. I felt that "Nature" was written in a much more poetic style than "Self Reliance" was, so it felt a lot less mind numbing to read, but I also liked it more because of my deep and intense love of nature (sarcasm). As much as I agree with the premise of "Self Reliance", it just was written in a less exciting style than "Nature" Was. In general, the whole 'nature' thing is used in far too many writings, however, Emerson really dug deeper and brought something different to the table.

  16. Emerson’s both essays Self-Reliance and Nature distinguish a sense of philosophical interoperations on how society views others or nature in general. Personally, out of both essay I found self- Reliance to be more compelling since it helps people become motivated and get a deep insight on how they can make a difference for themselves whether it is trying to become independent or just speaking up for you. In the essay “Nature” however the reader views on how society perceives nature in which my opinion is much harder to opinionate about. In general I define something compelling if it can help stimulate confidence or curiosity within oneself.

  17. I would define compelling as something that sparks curiosity, or interest within a person. I think that both of Emerson's essays were both very compelling, and both offered me a new way to look at the world. However, I felt that "Nature" was personally more interesting than "Self Reliance". "Nature" really helped me open up my mind on how todays society takes little gifts for granted, such as the stars. I have a love for nature that I believe not many people do, so I found "Nature" to be easier for me to connect to, and much more interesting to read. "Self Reliance" focused more on how important being self reliant is. It will help you be successful as you get older, when you have to be dependent on yourself, and no one else. I've seen many different types of writing focused around the same idea as "Self Reliance", but I have never seen anything quite like "Nature". It gave me a different way to look at the world, and I definitely connected to it on a more personal level than "Self Reliance". This is why I found it more compelling.

I personally believed that Emerson's "Self-Reliance" was more compelling to read than "Nature". To me, for a piece of writing to be compelling, the reader must be able to relate to it, agree, and find the piece overall enjoyable to read. This was true when I read "Self-Reliance" because it was about people following their own ideas and being their own person instead of a person that society wants them to be, while "Nature" was a piece about people's connections they can have with nature. I found "Self-Reliance to be more relatable and moving, because I agreed with the theme and message of be writing. As I was reading, I loved the idea of the writing piece and I wanted to read more writing like it, which is what I consider to be compelling writing.

  19. When I think of compelling, I expect a powerful story that strongly influences me to see things in a different perspective. Hence, "Nature" was more of a compelling essay to me because it truly changed my point of view of nature after making me reflect upon superficial desires that I have been yearning for. I feel that "Nature" allowed me to have a bigger self-improvement than "Self Reliance" due to the fact that I have a been a person who constantly takes nature for granted instead of lacking responsibility. All in all, "Nature" taught me how to appreciate the simple things of the physical world and turn to nature when facing unhappy circumstances.

  20. In both of the works of Ralph Waldo Emerson that we read, he puts forth ideas about people and how they should interact with the world. In “Self Reliance” Emerson talks about how people really need to rely on and value their own thoughts, ideas, and opinions. In “Nature,” Emerson speaks mainly about how need to reconnect, by being alone in nature. I found “Nature” to be more compelling than “Self Reliance” because not only did I find it easier to read, but also I felt as if I agreed with so much of what he said. I kind of almost think I had a similar experience at camp. Although I was with friends, we were all in an area surrounded by trees, giving it a feel of isolation, away from the everyday, even though we were right next to a major road. There were other contributing factors, but I felt great there, in every way I felt better. I never wanted to leave, and I can’t wait to go back. I think that’s kind of what his work reminded me of.

  21. I certainly agree more with the Self Reliance essay by Emerson more than the Nature one. In the Self Reliance essay, Emerson talks about how we can't let others shape our lives; we have to shape our own lives, basically non-conformists. In the Nature essay, it is just said that to truly be alone and find solitude, you must be in nature. While Nature is certainly an enjoyable place to be, I don not believe you have to be there to be truly alone, as I have felt solace in many other places

Interesting response. However, the question was not which essay you agree with, but rather, which you find more compelling.

      Aren't those different things?

I personally believe that Self Reliance was more compelling. Compelling means something that is interesting and grabs your attention. I think Self Reliance was more compelling because I connected with it more than his other essay. A lot of the things Ralph Emerson discuses in Self Reliance relate to things in my life. For example since both my parents work a great deal, I have to do many things my self. Also I found "Nature" very difficult to read. Because of that I could not relate to it as well.

I define compelling as more pressing or important, or even more powerful. and it is in my opinion that "Self Reliance" by Emerson was more compelling simply due to the fact that it had a stronger meaning. Because it can be used in every day life; and it effects everyone. In "Self Reliance" he talks about how we shape our own lives, and basically that we make or break us. in "Nature" Emerson says that to truly be alone we have to be in nature. What he said makes reigns true in the sense that man is in Gods most basic element, but not in the sense that that is where we will truly be alone.

I thought Nature was more compelling than "Self- Reliance." To me, compelling is defined as intriguing and enticing. Nature gave more of a realistic perspective of how an adult and child view nature. It made me really think about how we view Nature itself. Besides it being more realistic, it was mor relatable and easier to comprehend because it gave actual examples rather than philosophical and metaphorical writing like "Self- Reliance." It made me think of nature in a different way.

I found " Nature" more compelling than "self-reliance" I find something compelling when it draws me in and makes me want to read on. Nature seemed to tell more of a story. It explained how a child is more observant of nature than an adult, and how a man should view as a child views. Along with telling a more intriguing story, it seemed very straight forward and gave me a message that I can hold on to. Thanks to this story, people are able to see the Earth in a deeper, more meaningful view.

Compelling in my opinion is when you feel beyond inspired; you get to the point where you want to change something about your life. 'Self-Reliance' was deffinetly the essay that I connected with personally. The essay was mostly about being yourself and embracing who you are. Being independent is a goal that I've strived for since I was young, so reading something that really related to my life not only compelled me but made me strive even further.
